Very exhausted from a long day of church then St Jerome's Laneway Festival, tired but satisfied, my ears are still ringing.
The festival started out quite average, a few things I noticed were most of the early bands like Gersy and Wolf and Cub play a lot of same sounding songs and there are a LOT of "OC kids" (you can tell them apart because they dressed in straight out of magazine clothes and the girls wear clothes that would most likely fall off if there was any moshing).
The festival started getting interesting when the Poisies played, they were quite energetic and a tight band in all accounts. Things got quite uncomfortably interesting when the lead guitarist took off his pants and wished the crowd a "good aftermoon" at the last song.
The last 3 bands that I watched were all great. Decoder Ring is a band more people should check out, very simple but emotive electronica with some nice riffs reminiscent of the Edge, one of the songs sounded like "where the streets have no name" with drum and bass parts. Oh did I mention the singer is an awfully cute girl and the drummer is awesome?
Broken Social Scene was one of the main reasons I went to the festival and they delivered a mindblowing set. I don't think I'll ever see another 7++ piece band who'll play with such energy and still produce such a tight sound. Even though they played all the favourites (including KC Accidental!!), it had a completely different feeling from the album. Just watching them changing and even swapping instruments in and between each song was inspiring. All in all the best band of the day for making music so much fun to watch and listen to.
The night ended with the Avalanches, a DJ duo who had some nice mixes but in the end I left early.
